Health and fitness has become an important part of everybody’s lives in recent years, with the benefits of physical fitness being attributed to lower stress levels and better overall health.  This has led to all fitness centres becoming more popular, from swimming pools, through gyms and onto indoor sports centres.

There are so many indoor sports for the exercise seeker to choose from, it is really down to how much energy they want to put into the sport, whether they want to engage in team sports and whether they wish to play in the leagues connected with their chosen sports.  A couple of popular sports for the person who wishes to play a relatively simple game which only requires a minimum of one other person are badminton and tennis.

Badminton is a popular game that is a little easier to play than tennis as the shuttlecock tends to take a little longer to get where it is going, this allows the player to relax a bit more than in tennis.  It can be played as a singles or doubles game, as a pastime or at a more competitive level, depending on the individual.  Badminton was originally played in British India in the mid-18th century, though it was an adaptation of the game “Battledore and Shuttlecock”, evidence of which can be seen from 1804.

Tennis is a game that is similar to badminton in many respects, though the net is on the floor.  It can be played as a singles or doubles game, again either as a pastime or professionally.  One of the main differences with tennis to many other indoor sports is that it can be played outside when there is better weather.  It can also be played by the whole family, with uneven pairings being common as parents and children try to balance themselves out on either side of the net.  It is a very fun sport, as is badminton, and a good family activity.

Both of these sports can be started at a reasonably small cost to yourself, with racquets being the main expense.  These come in a variety of types, weights and costs, with there being some very cheap ones available until you decide whether you are serious.  Many sports centres also provide equipment to play many of the games that they offer.
